EEIT Student project: IoT kit for monitoring VGU’s server room
To avoid the worst scenarios, we must supervise the server room's conditions. Therefore, an IoT system, or a smart monitoring system for more specific, is required to automatically keep track of necessary conditions and generate actions when needed.
EEIT 2017 students Nguyễn Minh Thiện, Trần Gia Phúc, Lê Hữu Tuấn Huy and Đặng Văn Phước, supervised by Mr. Trần Quang Nhu (Team leader of EEIT Lab Engineers) successfully defended a student research project to make an IoT system using the Raspberry Pi to monitor the server room of VGU on 4 August, 2020.
In modern days, people have witnessed the massive revolution and the importance of data's involvement in different aspects. With the accelerated development of the Internet, customers, who have the requirement to employ data storage, can come from all over the world. Moreover, servers are considered as the backbone of the modern Internet and other major informatics services. As a result, the concern of finding reliable service platforms for the clients, and the concern of having sustainable server rooms of service providers are more significant than ever.
One of the basic needs to achieve optimal performance is that the server room must be kept in certain conditions. If environmental conditions do not meet the standard requirements, it might lead to severe issues, such as server crashes, reducing equipment life expectancy, or increasing overall maintenance expenses. Besides, there are problems that we might face when hosting a server, such as loss of electricity or internet connections.
To avoid the worst scenarios, we must supervise the server room's conditions. Therefore, an IoT system, or a smart monitoring system for more specific, is required to automatically keep track of necessary conditions and generate actions when needed.
"A wholehearted dedication is credited to Mr. Trần Quang Nhu, this project's supervisor, for this initial idea and his help throughout the execution of the project. Without him, this project will not be possible. Besides that, building the system is extremely exciting and useful, participating in this project also courage us to learn a lot from the practical problems and mistakes, also gain much experience during the process." the group team leader, Mr. Thiện said.
